Guidance & Support

Immediate Help When Someone Dies

What To Do When Someone Dies

When someone dies, the death must first be verified by a doctor, nurse or paramedic. Once this has happened, we can usually arrange to bring your loved one into our care at our funeral home in Ripon, where they will be treated with dignity and respect throughout.

If you are unsure what to do, call us on 01765 647 163 and we can guide you through the next steps.

Death In Hospital Or Care Home

If a death occurs in hospital, the hospital bereavement team or another member of staff will normally contact the next of kin and explain the next steps, including any paperwork that may need to be completed before arrangements can move forward.

The hospital will care for your loved one until arrangements are made for us to bring them into our care. Once the necessary documentation is in place, we can liaise with the hospital and arrange the transfer on your behalf.

In a nursing or care home, staff may liaise with us directly and will often help guide the family through the immediate process. They may ask whether the funeral will involve a burial or cremation so the correct arrangements can be made. If you are unsure about any part of the process, you can contact us at any time and we will explain what happens next.

Sudden Or Unexpected Death

If a death is sudden or unexpected, it may need to be reported to the Coroner.

If the death happens outside a hospital or care home, call 999 and request an ambulance and police, explaining the circumstances.

The Coroner may arrange a post-mortem examination or, in some cases, an inquest. Their office will keep the next of kin informed, explain what happens at each stage and advise when funeral arrangements can proceed.

We can also support you during this time, answer any questions you may have and help explain the process as clearly as possible.

Registering A Death

For an expected death, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death is reviewed through the Medical Examiner process. The Medical Examiner will then contact the family to confirm when they are able to register the death and explain what needs to happen next.

We can help explain the process, what information or documents you may need and what to expect before arranging the funeral. Once the death has been registered, the necessary paperwork can be issued so the funeral arrangements can continue.

If you are unsure about any stage, we are always available to offer clear guidance, answer your questions and provide reassurance throughout the process.

Coroner & Post-Mortem Process

A death may be referred to the Coroner when the cause is unclear, sudden or unexpected.

The Coroner may decide that a post-mortem examination is required to establish the cause of death. In some circumstances, an inquest may also be necessary to understand more fully how or why the person died.

This process can take several days, and the Coroner will keep the next of kin informed as matters progress. They will also advise when the necessary paperwork has been completed and when funeral arrangements can move forward.

We understand this can feel like a difficult and uncertain time, so we are always available to explain the process, answer any questions you may have and provide clear guidance while you wait.

Help Paying For A Funeral

There are several ways families may be able to receive help with funeral costs.

A Funeral Expenses Payment may be available if you or your partner receive certain qualifying benefits. It can contribute towards costs such as burial or cremation fees, travel, documents and some transportation costs.

Government assistance may not cover the full cost of the funeral, so we are always happy to discuss options openly with you.

Money may also sometimes be available from the deceased person’s bank account or estate to help pay funeral expenses. Banks may require a death certificate, funeral invoice and identification before making a direct payment to the funeral director.

Bereavement Support & Organisations

Grief affects everyone differently, and there is no set timescale or correct way to experience bereavement. Everyone responds to loss in their own way, and support can be helpful at any stage.

Support is available from a number of local and national organisations, including Cruse Bereavement Support, The Compassionate Friends, Cardiac Risk in the Young, Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide and Samaritans.

If you are unsure which organisation may be most appropriate, you are welcome to speak to us and we can help point you in the right direction for further guidance and support.

General Guidance FAQs

Clear Answers To Help You Through

When someone dies, it is completely normal to have questions about what happens next, who you need to contact and how the process works. Below are some of the most common questions families ask us.

What should I do first when someone dies?

The first steps depend on where and how the person died. If you are unsure, you can call us at any time and we will explain who needs to be contacted and what should happen next.

What happens if someone dies at home?

If the death was expected, a medical professional will usually need to verify the death before further arrangements can be made. Once the appropriate steps are complete, we can arrange to bring your loved one into our care.

What happens if someone dies in hospital?

The hospital will usually guide the next of kin through the initial paperwork and medical process. Your loved one will remain in the hospital’s care until arrangements are made for us to transfer them into our care.

What happens after a sudden or unexpected death?

A sudden or unexpected death may need to be referred to the Coroner. Depending on the circumstances, further investigation or a post-mortem may be required before the funeral arrangements can fully proceed.

When can I register the death?

For an expected death, the Medical Examiner process usually takes place before registration. The family will be contacted when the necessary paperwork is ready and they are able to arrange an appointment to register the death.

What does the Coroner do?

The Coroner investigates certain deaths where the cause is unclear, unexpected or requires further examination. They may arrange a post-mortem or inquest and will keep the next of kin informed throughout the process.

Is help available towards funeral costs?

Financial support may be available depending on your circumstances, including certain Government funeral payments. We can explain the options available and help you understand what support may be worth exploring before arrangements are finalised.

Where can I find bereavement support?

There are many organisations that provide emotional and practical support following a bereavement. If you are unsure where to turn, we can help point you towards organisations suited to your circumstances and type of loss.
